Behavioural and Competency-Based Interviewing

Behavioural and Competency-Based Interviewing

Unstructured interviews are close to useless as predictors, yet they remain the default. This session teaches the structured behavioural interview: how to build questions from a competency, how to probe with STAR, and how to score in a way that survives challenge.

  • By the end of the program, participants will be able to:

    • Explain why structured interviews outperform unstructured ones and by how much
    • Write behavioural questions directly from a defined competency
    • Probe answers using the STAR / CAR framework without leading the candidate
    • Score candidates against a behaviourally anchored rating scale and run a fair panel debrief

This program is organized by the Academy of Professionals Malaysia (APM).

Features:

  • The evidence: predictive validity of interview types (8 min)
  • From competency to question: the derivation method (12 min)
  • STAR probing and the four common candidate evasions (14 min)
